Students noticed that many students were walking to the new McDonald’s and Sonic locations, but there was not a safe crosswalk along the route. This created a safety concern for students and other pedestrians crossing busy streets before and after school.
To better understand the issue, students created surveys to find out how many people used that route and spoke with the Brookland Police Department about any past incidents or concerns. After gathering information, students worked with the City of Brookland to help get crosswalks installed in the area.
This project showed collaboration, research, accountability, and technology through surveys, data collection, communication with community leaders, and problem solving. What makes this project unique is that students helped create a real solution to a real community safety issue that will continue helping people in the future.
Community partners included the City of Brookland and the Brookland Police Department, who worked with students throughout the project and helped make the crosswalk installation possible.
Students also shared updates about the project through school and social media platforms to help raise awareness about pedestrian safety and community involvement.
