This project focused on creating a new and improved Senior Center evacuation map to enhance safety during emergencies. The previous map was outdated, hard to read, and missing important details like clear directions and safety equipment locations. Our client, Vicki Hutson, reached out to the EAST class to help tackle the problem, that was her hand drawn map. After visiting with Mrs. Vicki, and touring the building, our class carefully measured and documented the layout. Using FloorPlanner, a professional online software, and an online design tool, Canva, we developed an accurate, easy-to-follow map that clearly marks rooms, exits, and key pathways to help guide occupants—especially seniors—to safety. We have successfully created and presented a final map to our client. We will meet with multiple people within the Area Agency on Aging in March to present our project journey and hang the completed map in the Murfreesboro Senior Center.
Working on this project as a whole class, not only created a great workflow for the projects, but also helped the students learn first hand how to solve community problems. They were able to research, collect, and report the best solutions, and necessary data. Meeting with Vicki allowed each student to see what client communication looks like. Not only were we able to help our community out, create a safer and more professional map solution, but the students were able to take their project Management skills into their own chosen projects.
