Reading Buddies

The Reading Buddies project was created after EAST students Chloe Adams and Rose McGilberry recognized a growing challenge at Fairview Elementary, within Texarkana Arkansas School District—student motivation to read independently was low, and many young readers struggled to stay engaged. To address this problem, the students designed a fun and interactive solution using technology available in the EAST classroom.

Using Tinkercad and a 3D printer, Chloe and Rose created personalized “Reading Buddies” for students to keep at their desks during reading time. These small, custom-printed characters give students someone to “read to,” helping build confidence, focus, and excitement around reading. To further encourage reading growth, students earn AR points that can be exchanged for 3D-printed accessories for their Buddy. This reward system helps reinforce positive reading habits while giving students personalization and ownership over their Buddy.

Rose and Chloe have been working on these since September and are ready to send to Fairview after Christmas Break!

How the Project Fills the CART:

Critical Thinking: Students identified a real problem in their school community and designed a creative solution that encourages literacy and engagement.

Advanced Technology: The project uses 3D printing to design, prototype, and produce Reading Buddies and accessories.

Real-World Application: Reading Buddies directly support literacy goals and are used daily by students.

Teamwork: The project required collaboration between EAST students, teachers, and library staff, as well as coordination with the community partner.

What Makes This Project Unique?

This project blends literacy support with modern technology, transforming reading time into an interactive and personalized experience. The use of 3D printing not only motivates young readers but also showcases how technology can meet emotional and educational needs in a fresh, imaginative way.
