The Stained Page is a local coffee shop, used book store in downtown Texarkana. The revival of bringing downtown Texarkana back to life is in full swing. Our facilitator visited the coffee shop earlier this school year and explained what EAST was to the owners. They were intrigued about was EAST was and our facilitator mentioned students coming to visit to see if they could help in any way. Zoey Dycus and Alina Moya visited the following week and they came up with a plan. The owners dream was to have a community herb and flower garden in the back of their building on the vacant lot. The students started planning what to do. Alina Moya and her father went to the lot the following weekend to clean up the property. In the meantime Zoey and Alina have brought Maddox Stone on board to help with their vision. Maddox is a pro in Blender. He is currently working on the design for the garden with plants, herbs, veggies, and trees that will thrive in our area. Zoey and Alina will go to the Stained Page soon and present their design. From that point the owners will have a visual and have the ability to start planning more.
The problem the students are solving is helping a local business owner and the revitalization of downtown Texarkana. Zoey and Alina are using their resources as student champions to talk to the owners and collaborate with them. The sophistication of the project is in Maddox using Blender to create a visual and also planning the vegetation that will grow in our area.
Zoey and Alina are the student champions for 24/25. They were chosen as a team for their students growth and self-directed learning. They both were eager to talk to the couple at the Stained Page. These two students have grown as EAST students in the past 3 years and have taken on many roles. They are leaders.
The plans for the Stained Page as of now is a garden with tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers for the areas they can climb, and herbs. Also Maddox is inserting benches, a gazebo, and other local vegetation to beautify the space such as sunflowers to block off an area that looks at a no so pleasing building, a pumpkin patch for children, and tree native to Texarkana.
