Penguin Nest Boxes

The Penguin Nest Box was made for the betterment of the penguins. This was because there seemed to be a shortage of penguin nest boxes resulting in penguins fighting for them. When a penguin got a box it would refuse to get out to eat because of it being afraid to lose its box. This caused the penguins to get sick. Inorder to make these boxes we started with a clay model to see how the shape would be. After getting that approved by the Little Rock Zoo we moved on to make it much bigger. We had to make 2 of them for the penguin nest boxes. We used poolcrete/guinte to make these boxes. First we made a frame using cardboard, pool noodles, and chicken wire. Our community partner was the Little Rock Zoo Education Coordinator-Jessica Devault. This project fills the cart by C - critical thinking by using poolcrete/guinte and other items to build the difficult shape of the nest box.. A - Having us learn about the penguins and what they need and the type of materials that will be safe for them. R - having us dealing with financing, budgeting, and working with the Little Rock Zoo to create actual nest boxes that will be used in the enclosure. T - Everyone in the group had a specific role that contributed to the group and to this project. What makes this project unique is that we so far have been the only ones to be able to fully make two penguin nest boxes and get them delivered to the Little Rock Zoo. We worked on this project during the 23-24 school year. In between this project and time there were many meetups with the Little Rock Zoo as well as zoom meetings and emails. We have posted pictures of this project on social media showing us working together on this project. Despite all of our efforts and hardwork, unfortunately the project did crumble after a few months, however we are proud of the fact that we created something that worked for a while. We plan for some students to continue working on this project to create a lasting nest box for the future.
