The Melba, a local movie theater, has been in operation for over 85 years. Being an older facility, the chairs in this theater had no cup holders. In the past, many students have put forward effort to resolve this issue, but came up unsuccessful. While at a meeting together, the facilitators for Eagle Mountain and Sulphur Rock elementary EAST programs, realized they each had a group of students working on the same project, unknowingly. Following their conversations, the two facilitators decided to work collaboratively with one another in order to solve their goal. Collaboration between the students began through email, google meets, and multiple in-person meetings. Prior to meeting with one another, the two teams had both started on a design and ultimately constructed a design with a consensus that would solve the problem most effectively. Following the final design template, the students were able to take a sketch of the arm rest, pictures of all sides of the chairs, collect the different cup sizes to take back to school, also an arm rest and side of a chair so they would have full access to it at school. Using Tinkercad, a basic design was agreed upon and the students moved on to test printing, which proved to be difficult. The printer malfunctioned multiple times, as well as, having to change the original design multiple times. Finally, a prototype was printed and through this process the students were able to advance their knowledge in Tinkercad, Cura, Bambu Studio and 3D-printing as a whole. In addition to learning more about these different types of software, the students also gained valuable real-world experience in helping community partners realize a goal fulfilled and being proud of their own efforts of helping someone resolve their problem.
