Problem:

New students coming to Brookland School District often felt overwhelmed and unsure of where to go, who to ask for help, or how to get connected when starting at a new school. This sometimes caused stress, confusion, and difficulty adjusting to their new environment.

Project:

The Buddy System team worked to create a welcoming experience for new students by researching the challenges they face when transferring schools. Students interviewed the school registrar, counselors, and secretaries to better understand the needs of incoming students. The team then designed an information-packed welcome packet and developed a mentor system where student guides can be assigned to help new students adjust, answer questions, and feel more connected at Brookland.

How it Fills CART:

This project fills a community need by promoting belonging, improving communication, and helping students feel supported during a major life transition. By building relationships between current and new students, the Buddy System encourages leadership, empathy, and school connectedness while creating a more positive and welcoming school culture.
