This EAST@ Dunbar project focuses on the problem at our school that prevents students from being able to buy traditional yearbooks. Basically, the price the yearbook company charges is too expensive, which means some students cannot afford to buy one. Our team wanted to find a way for every student in our school would have a chance to keep their school memories from their time here at Dunbar BLE Magnet Middle School.

To solve this problem did some research of the problem and surveyed students to find out if they would be interested in having a yearbook. Then created a digital yearbook version of the yearbook. We used pictures taken in the spring by the school’s picture company to create the student portrait section of the yearbook. However, we realized that not all students were able to take a picture on picture day because they were absent or not prepared. We contacted the company to try to schedule a make-up day, and were told that a make-up session would not be possible. To address this problem, another group of EAST students organized and hosted a make-up picture day so that any student who wanted to be included in the yearbook could have their photo taken. Then we used tools in Canva to remove and replace backgrounds so the photos would match the original portraits as closely as possible. In addition, teachers and staff shared photos they had taken at various school events, which allowed us to better capture the memories and experiences of this school year at D(BLE)MMS. When we shared our project with Principal Cain, he liked it so much that he offered to pay for printed copies which will be issued to every student in our school for free! We contacted our district print shop to about providing printed copies and they should be ready soon!

We designed our yearbook using Canva.
