The Improved Classroom Signs Project was created to solve a visibility and navigation problem within our school. Previously, classroom room numbers and teacher names were displayed flat against the wall, making them difficult to see unless someone stood directly in front of the door. This caused confusion for visitors such as parents, substitute teachers, and new students who were unfamiliar with the building layout.
To address this issue, students designed and installed new hallway signs that hang perpendicular to the wall, making them visible from both directions in the hallway. Students created the signs using repurposed 24x18 yard-sign material, which is lightweight, durable, and cost-effective. Digital design tools such as Canva were used to design each sign, and vinyl cutting and print-transfer techniques were used to apply clean, professional lettering. Each sign displays the classroom number and teacher name, along with the college or university from which the teacher graduated, adding an informative and personalized element to the signage. The finished signs were mounted using ceiling-safe clips and adjustable ceiling hangers designed for standard ceiling grids, allowing for secure installation without damaging school property.
This student-led project demonstrates Critical Thinking, Advanced Technology, Real-World Problem Solving, and Teamwork (CART). By designing, producing, and installing the signs themselves, students created a long-term solution that improves building navigation while allowing signs to be easily updated in the future.
