Shade Trees on Playgrounds

Our EAST team noticed that the elementary playground had absolutely no shade, making outdoor play and learning uncomfortable and unsafe during hot months. To solve this problem, Facilitator Johnson-Cox applied for the S.T.O.P Grant. The Shade Trees on Playgrounds project was designed to plant trees that will provide lasting shade and a cooler, safer environment.

Using digital mapping tools and data analysis, students measured sunlight exposure and identified the best planting locations. This project fills the CART model by encouraging Critical Thinking (planning and analysis), Advanced Technology (digital mapping and design), Real Collaboration (working with facilities staff and community partners), and Authentic Learning (solving a real campus need).

Our community partner, Kristine KImbro with the Arkansas Department of Agriculture Forestry Division, provided tree donations and planting support.

The project began in September 2025 and was completed in October 2025. Students will continue monitoring tree growth throughout the year.
