With a high volume of foreign exchange students at the high school, we decided to take advantage of their unique cultural backgrounds by creating our program, “Friends Around the World.”
Throughout the 2016-2017 school year we have developed eight presentations featuring seven different countries to present to Mrs.Hoffman’s second grade class. We chose second grade because social studies is being introduced to the curriculum at this level, and our project provides an introduction to different cultures, which is also a part of their curriculum.
Presentations include a PowerPoint, songs, snacks, and crafts that help immerse the students into the culture of that country. Throughout each presentation the students have the opportunity to interact with the exchange student and ask them questions. It is apparent that with each new exchange student, the second grade class is becoming more interested in cultures and the learning opportunity at hand.
