This project was completed by my friend and I. We like to visit Craighead Forest Park a lot and walk around the lake. I've been numerous times but I didn't know there were other paths that you could walk through the woods and surrounding areas until I saw it mentioned on their website. Although it was mentioned, we still could not find the paths to see where they went. So we decided to create a map with the trails marked, the beginning and end, as well as their distances.
We spoke with the parks director who liked our idea and informed us this had not been done for them before. We used ArcGIS and started mapping the trails. We were able to locate the trails using Google maps as well as taking a couple of days to go out and walk the trails and visit with the park ranger. We color coded each trail on our map and are finished with the mapping part.
This project challenged us because 1. We had never used ArcGIS like this and this allowed Madalynn to become even more knowledgeable about the mapping software and 2. it connected us withe new community partners. We also learned more about the park than we had previously known. The next part of the project- we hope to create a QR code reader and place on flyers around the park for the community members to scan and be able to see where each trail goes while they are at the park. Our team members include Lilly Olson and Madalynn Harrell.
