Monette Cemetery Mapping Project

Quite a few years ago, the written records for a portion of our local cemetery, Monette Memorial Cemetery, were destroyed in a fire. After meeting with Dana McCuin, Monette Water Clerk, and Bob Blankenship, Monette Mayor, our EAST students wanted to help solve this problem. They met with city officials to determine the area of the cemetery that needed information collected. Two of our EAST students attended a GIS project builder training hosted by EAST. They received much needed help in setting up this project. Our next step was to collect aerial photos using a drone. We ran into a problem because our drone camera was broken. It wasn't stabilized and could not take systematic photos. We spent a lot of time working on our drone but could not get it working correctly. We finally reached out for help using our social media accounts. Blake McClelland with Corteva Agriscience served as our community partner and ended up helping us get the photos that we needed. Now we are ready to insert the photos into Drone2Map and start collecting data for each of the headstones using the ArcGIS Field Maps app. We're excited to get to work on this next step of our project.

This project fills the CART.

CRITICAL THINKING - Students have had to problem solve by working on the drone. They also are incorporating sophisticated technology by using ArcGIS.

ADVANCE - Students have had to advance their learning by using ArcGIS technology. This has been a student led project.

REAL - This project includes a client, the city of Monette, as well as a community partner, Blake McClelland with Corteva Agriscience. The Monette Cemetery Mapping Project has a clear purpose because it is filling a need. City records were destroyed years ago in a fire.

TEAMWORK - Students are working together in teams to complete this project. They are also working with professionals such as the mayor and our community partner, Blake McClelland.
