Inclusive Playgrounds

Turnbow Elementary School

We created mini communication boards for different areas of the playground to support students with communication needs, including special needs students and English Language Learners. Unlike large boards that interrupt play or personal devices that risk damage, these mini boards allow students to communicate while staying engaged. Each area of the playground has specific boards to meet needs. For example, the swingset area board has icons for Push, Stop, Go, Finished and other boards throughout the playground have more icons to choose from (hide and seek, basketball, hot, thirsty, ect.). All communication is initiated through pictures that are easily identified by students.
