Finding and Creating Data

You must login to register for training sessions.

GIS mapping and analysis projects are only as good as the data behind them; this can be especially challenging for locally-based EAST projects, covering small geographic areas such as a town or neighborhood. In this workshop, students will:

  • Become familiar with the different types of data commonly used with ArcGIS.
  • Learn how and where to search for existing data.
  • Learn how to use GPS and editing tools in ArcGIS to create their own data as needed.

This workshop will be extremely valuable for all students who are working on a GIS-based project.

ITEMS TO BRING:  Important: Each school must bring their Trimble GPS receivers (one per student if possible), with software already installed and operational, as well as chargers and download cables. If you are not sure of the operational status of your GPS receivers, please contact CAST well before your training session.

PRE-REQUISITE:  Students attending this workshop should already have a GIS-based project planned or started. Although no experience is required to attend this workshop, any experience that students already have with ArcGIS or their GPS units will be helpful. Students are encouraged to register/review the GPS with GIS Online course on the EAST Geospatial Online website.
