Pottsville High School EAST students challenge Atkins Red Devils in football and canned food donations for local food shelter.

EAST students at Pottsville High School challenged the Atkins Red Devils to not only winning the rivalry football game but to also bringing the most canned food items to be donated to the local food shelter, The Main Street Mission.

As one of the first projects of the year, Pottsville EAST students decided to challenge their rival in football to bring cans of food to the game. Since they only had about two weeks to pull this project off, students had no time to waste.

Posters were made and given to both schools for advertisement. Students also made calls to the local radio stations and newspapers to help spread the word about the event. From there students had to find a place to collect the canned food. A local car dealership, Phil Wright Autoplex, loaned two trucks, one black and one red (school colors!), in which to collect the cans. Another local business, VIP Awards, was generous enough to donate a custom trophy to give to the school that brought in the most canned food items.

The “Battle of the Cans” outcome was announced at half-time when EAST students presented the trophy. A total of 1373 cans were donated to Main Street Mission.

EAST students involved: Jay, Briana, Haley, Kayla, and Christen
