EAST students at Malvern High School awarded a $1,000 Blue & You Grant to offer a healthy and smart shopping class for low-income families in partnership with their local Wal-Mart.

Malvern High School EAST students Emily Brosius and Kentrell Weaver recognized a need in their community to help low-income families learn how to stretch their dollars in making healthier grocery purchases and get the most product for their money.

EAST faciliator Mary LaVergne saw an opportunity for funding on the EAST Initiative website through the Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue & You Foundation and encouraged her students to apply.

Brosius and Weaver spent one week writing the grant proposal, identifying the need in their community and upon submitting the request, received notification the same day they would receive $1,000 to support their project.

"It took us a while to write the grant because neither of us had any experience in grant writing so we wanted to do our best," Brosius said. "We were so happy to receive it because we know it will make the project better."

Brosius and Weaver have created a powerpoint presentation that will be used in a class, taught by the two EAST students. The class will provide shopping tips like paying attention to unit pricing to ensure the consumer gets the most product for the price and knowing when to buy fresh fruits and vegetables in the appropriate seasons to not overspend. At the end of the class, participants will be given Wal-Mart gift cards, purchased with the grant, to practice their new shopping lessons, while being coached by Brosius and Weaver.

The local Wal-Mart store in Malvern has offered use of a trainig room to teach the class and the EAST students hope to host their first session soon.
