John Ahlen joins EAST Board of Directors

EAST would like to welcome Dr. John Ahlen (back) to the EAST Initiative Board of Directors.

John AhlenOn Tuesday, November 22, 2011, EAST Initiative's Board of Directors unanimously voted and accepted John Ahlen to the EAST Initiative Board of Directors for a multi-year term.

"His relentless drive to further high quality learning and economic opportunities for Arkansans perfectly aligns with the mission of EAST.  His understanding of the skills required to compete and win the global economy will help ensure that EAST remains a powerful educational tool.”

Dr. Ahlen is currently the President of the Arkansas Science & Technology Authority, which was created in 1983 to bring the benefits of science and advanced technology to the people and state of Arkansas. The Authority supports a broad range of job creating activities to advance the talent and innovations necessary for Arkansas to prosper. Its interests include math and science education, scientific research, technology transfer and development, risk capital investments, growth entrepreneurship, and technology extension services to manufacturers.

John also spent a year as a Fellow at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy where he worked on state-federal technology partnerships.

He has a B.S. in bioengineering and Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Before coming to the Arkansas Science & Technology Authority, he served as Assistant Director for Science and Technology at the Illinois Legislative Council, where he directed the science policy research activities of the Council’s Science Unit. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
