Dardanelle High School EAST students continue their work with Trees of Distinction program.

Dardanelle EAST students Dalton and Seth were recently asked to reveal the new White Oak Champion Tree marker at the community's Council Oak Park in Dardanelle. The marker is one of three in Dardanelle. The others include the Arkansas State Champion Eastern Cottonwood and Arkansas State Champion Persimmon. The event was attended by members of the Arkansas Forestry Commission, Dardanelle Tree Board, and Mayor Carolyn McGee.

Wayne Shewmake of the Tree Board said of the students: "EAST students of Dardanelle High School have been a very big supporter of this program and have done a great job in writing pamphlets to give out to the public in 2005, 2007, and 2009." In those years, the students mapped the Trees of Distinction and developed pamphlets and booklets about the trees. They are in the process of developing a new booklet for next year, updating the Tree City USA program for Dardanelle.

Using Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Publisher, the new booklet will include images of the seven trees in each of the four seasons, and an original painting of the Arkansas Champion White Oak by Linda Williams Palmer of Hot Springs. Using Google Earth, the trees will be mapped to show the actual location in the city.

Shewmake also mentioned that EAST students and members of the Forestry Commission will again measure the Dardanelle Trees of Distinction next year to record any changes from 2009.

During the recent city-wide Arbor Day Celebration, Dalton and Seth were tour guides for the Arkansas Regional Library Trees of Distinction Front Street Tour for the day.

The Arkansas Champion Tree program recognizes those trees that are the largest of the species. Trees are compared using the American Forests’ “Bigness Index.” A full list of Arkansas State Champion Trees can be found online at
