SATD group formed to spread awareness about texting while driving.

Waldron EAST Students have created a group called S.A.T.D (Students Against Texting & Driving) to inform other students at Waldron High School about the dangers of texting while driving.

An Awareness Week was held April 17-22. During this week we made posters, brochures, and a “No Texting While Driving” pledge, using Adobe Photoshop. We also used iMovie to make and edit videos that were played on the big screen TVs during lunch.

Students were given a thumb band reading “Text Free Driver” when they signed the pledge, putting their thumb print on the poster to make it more realistic. The pledges were hung up in the Commons area. Our goal was to have every student and staff member sign the pledge and receive a thumb band.

We researched many speakers to find one for our event and settled on Merry Dye, who lost her daughter, Mariah West, to a texting-while-driving accident. As guest speake, she showed a Power Point presentation and a movie, and gave advice on not texting while driving.

WHS students and staff said that the texting-while-driving project was a success. The EAST students hope their project informed other students about the dangers of texting while driving and the impact it can have on people’s life.
