Students pass on technical knowledge to others.

Fouke EAST students recently completed session one of a Video Book Tech Camp.  Students in 4th– 6th grades were eligible to attend the free camp, which was held four days after school. Those attending the camp learned how to create a video book. They wrote and illustrated their own stories, then used technology to publish them in a creative format. Students used new Mac computers purchased with grant funds to create their books. They learned to use various software while making their books, including Keynote and iMovie. The student-created books are being published on Facebook and the school’s website.

“Increasing students’ literacy skills is easier when they are engaged. The use of technology makes that much easier,” said Crystal Hewitt, Fouke EAST Facilitator, who helped administer the tech camp.  Fouke EAST students Emily Conway, Bailey Cravens, Zack Taylor, Shelby Cummings, Hailey Grogan, and Lakin Lenaway taught the camp after learning how to create a video book in their EAST class.  EAST is a community service-based technology class offered as an elective to students in 7th – 12th grades at Fouke Public Schools.

Fouke EAST will be hosting Session Two of the Video Book Tech Camp for students in 2nd – 3rd grades after school March 7th -10th.  Then on March 17th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm there will be a Parent Night.  All parents and community members are invited to come see the video books and give the students attending the camp a chance to show off what they’ve learned. Parents attending Parent Night will receive a DVD containing the student-created video books.

This project is funded by the Enhancing Education Through Technology grant, made possible by the Arkansas Department of Education and is done in cooperation with the Southeast Educational Service Cooperative and the EAST Initiative.
