High school and junior high students team up to collect needed items for Craighead County foster children.

As Nettleton High School EAST student Sterling launched the Backpacking for Foster Kids project for the third year, he shared the project with the junior high school EAST classes. A group of 8th grade students excitedly accepted the challenge of collecting items for foster children in Craighead County. They formed a project team and began brainstorming ideas. They decided to host a competition between NJHS Seminar classes to promote the project.

Using Photoshop, EAST students Adrianna and Ariana created an informational flyer to be attached to a collection bag for each classroom. The team recruited several junior high EAST students to present the project and competition rules to their classmates during Seminar classes.

Throughout the competition, EAST students engaged in “smack talk” between Seminar classes to heighten the competition, and as a result, they collected over 1500 gently used clothing items, shoes, backpacks, and toiletries. "It made me feel really good to do this," said EAST student Adrianna. "I felt like I was really helping people."
