Project Goal – What is the outcome/deliverable?:

The goal of our project is to not only be more energy efficient, but to also educate our community on ways to conserve energy. Our goal was to create flower beds for our school without using purchased energy. Our final product will be flower beds that are watered by recycled rainwater and a solar pump.

Purpose of Project – Who is the project helping and what is the project about?:

The purpose of this project is to make our school more energy efficient and raise awareness of the importance of conserving energy while beautifying the front of our school. This project will be introduced to the public during the spring so the residents of Rison can see how easy it is to save energy. We also hope to see a lot more energy saving not just at our school but throughout the community because of this project

Future Plans:

Once the Solar Flowers project is fully complete, we will have an “unveiling” ceremony where the students of Rison High and community member will be invited to see how the solar pump irrigation system works. In addition to the demonstration of the project, we will include handouts that list ways every person can save energy at their homes. We hope this is just a beginning of conserving energy at Rison. We hope future EAST classes take this project and expand energy efficiency to the other campuses and the town of Rison.

Additional Information:

This project was only possible through collaboration with other community and school members. Our school’s agriculture and the High School EAST classes were brought in to help with the engineering part of the irrigation system. Our local county extension agent educated us on how to design the system and which flowers would grow in our area. Our dads were a huge part in helping with the heavy duties of this project. This project was successfully because of our collaboration and use of the resources and people available to us.
