Opening Plenary and Banquet Student Speakers

Over the last few years, EAST has used students to help introduce speakers and other various things during the Opening Plenary and Banquet. This year, we would like to continue with this tradition.Instead of requesting that we receive two representatives from each state, we are looking for a small number of entertaining and outgoing students who are interested in representing all EAST students from the stage. This is a similar role as a host for the Oscars or the Academy Awards.  The only difference is that instead of only one main host there will be a team of hosts.

Comparable to the Leadership Teams, we are looking for team members who exhibit the following characteristics.

  • Outgoing and dependable
  • Articulate and well versed in EAST
  • Mature and responsible
  • Friendly, funny, and entertaining
  • Comfortable interacting with press, VIP's and guests
  • Excellent team player
  • Exceptional leadership, presentation, and communication skills

Roles and Responsibilities

As a member of this team, you will be asked to communicate with the EAST Training & Events Manager and your team members on a regular basis prior to the Conference to develop a plan for hosting these two evening sessions. This team will create a number of scripts for each evening session focused around a goal or theme. These scripts will need to be approved and memorized prior to the Conference.

Nominations and Submission Instructions

There are two sections for this submission; a Facilitator Letter of Recommendation and three student submission components.

1.Facilitator Letter of Recommendation – please include:

  • Why the nominee should be considered for the position.
  • Past experience/roles that would benefit him/her in the position.
  • Provide examples of their leadership, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Do you feel the student exhibits the characteristics listed above? Please provide specific examples.
  • Days and times nominee can be reached by phone (preferably during the school day) and a phone number.
  • Email address of nominee
  • School Name
  • Facilitator name and email address

2. Student Submission – must include all three component listed below.

  1. One page document - This document is a one page typed document (no bigger than size 12 font) that tells us a little about yourself, why you think you should be considered for this position, explain past experience that would help in this position, what your personality would bring to the two evening sessions, etc. Don’t forget to include what EAST means to you following the theme “This is…My EAST.”
  2. Provide 3 sample scripts that would serve as the opening of the Opening Plenary or Banquet, the closing statement of either session, and an introduction of the EAST President / CEO, Matt Dozier.
  3. Create a one to two minute audition video that expresses your personality and why you would be a good candidate for this position. This part of your submission must be burned to DVD and received by 5pm at the EAST Offices by the submission deadline to be considered. Sorry, no exceptions.

Here are some tips for making a DVD that will display your best qualities.

  • The biggest mistake people make is to sit down without any planning and just record what they are thinking. This usually spells certain doom. So think about what you want to talk about, practice it, and run it by some friends.
  • Be as creative as possible. Creativity doesn't necessarily mean you have to construct elaborate sets; just that you talk about things that are interesting and different. Tell us a story. Talk about your school, your goals, anything!
  • Be as entertaining and outgoing as possible. Remember, you are going to be hosting two of the most exciting components of the EAST Conference.  We want to make sure you are up to it so speak clearly and eloquently. Try not to stumble or pause too much, smile and come across as a natural.
  • Make it conversational. Reciting rehearsed lines is no good. Even if you are going from a set, prepared script make it appear as though you are just talking.
  • Your smile should be heard as well as seen.

Here are some technical guidelines to making your video:

  • It cannot be longer than 2 minutes.
  • Make sure the audio, sound and light come through. This means that you have a lamp (or sun) shinning on your face and not behind you, that there isn't background noise, and that you can be seen clearly and heard clearly.
  • All this sounds obvious but it is critical that you accomplish these technical tasks or your tape will be difficult to view.
