Mansfield High School EAST Receives $2,000 Service-Learning Grant
Mansfield High School EAST was recently awarded a $2,000 grant for the "Project Ignition" Safe Driving Campaign, sponsored by State Farm Insurance and the National Youth Leadership Council. Mansfield is one of 25 schools nationwide selected to participate in this year's program, and is the only Arkansas school with a winning service project proposal.

Eureka Springs EAST Showcases Blood Pressure Wristband
Students from Eureka Springs High School EAST recently completed the first stage of work on a monitoring device for youth at risk for blood pressure-related problems. The student team has been recognized as one of 18 high schools nationwide to receive a 2006 Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams grant, and traveled to the MIT campus to showcase their invention.

EAST Student Chosen as Presidential Scholar in the Arts
Steve Wilson, a senior EAST student at Santa Ynez High School, was recently selected as one of the 500 national semifinalists for the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA) Presidential Scholars Program in Miami and received a check for $10,000. He now has been selected as one of the 20 award winners for the United States.

EAST students from Russellville High School recently spent a day at the Arkansas 4-H Center in Little Rock experiencing ExCEL, an outdoor program consisting of mentally and physically challenging group and individual activities. Students were required to lay aside their own agendas and pre-conceived ideas in order to contribute to the overall effort and to function as a team.

EAST students from Star City High School recently addressed the Arkansas Legislature about proposed Crystal Meth legislation. The students presented research in support of a bill regulating the sale of over-the-counter cold medication which contain ingredients used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

Behind the Scenes with Governor Mike Huckabee: A Student's Perspective is a short documentary showing an average day in the life of the Governor from the point of view of a high school student. Blake Erickson, a 17-year-old EAST student at Lakeside High School in Hot Springs, spent a day traveling with Gov. Huckabee to get a taste of the political and governmental duties one faces as Governor and to share those experiences with us.

A recent EAST student summer project at the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies (CAST) concentrated on creating a detailed 3D model of critical portions of the city of Fayetteville, AR. The makers of Google Earth and SketchUp were so impressed by the project's results that they have now featured the work as a "Google Pick" in the Google 3D Warehouse. Items in the 3D Warehouse can be downloaded for use in Google SketchUp or viewed in Google Earth.

Clarksville High School EAST recently received a software grant with a retail value totaling $3,995.00. The grant, which will equip the CHS EAST Lab with Learn.com's CourseMaker Studio 3.7, will help Clarksville EAST students create tutorials to teach children and parents the importance of being safe online.

EAST students at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School recently won the silver level award in the International Schools CyberFair 2006 for their claymation animation project. Students in the exhibition were challenged to prepare for the future by thinking about their own future plans, the conditions that will affect the future of their community, and issues of global importance.
