EAST Initiative Board of Directors Elects New Officers

Dominik Mjartan elected Chairman of the Board.

Little Rock, AR (September 28, 2010)—A new Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson have been elected to the board of directors of the EAST Initiative, the Arkansas-based non-profit educational organization that assists schools in implementing EAST (Environmental and Spatial Technology) classrooms.


The new Chairperson is Dominik Mjartan, Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Communications at Southern Bancorp.  New Vice-Chairperson is Prakash Jalihal, Senior Vice President at FIS.  Melanie VanZandt Bradford, Division Leader of Research and Technology at the Arkansas Department of Education, continues as Secretary.

 

Retiring from the board are Willard A. “Bill” Nott, Chair of Education, Engineers Without Borders-USA and R.J. Martino, Chief Executive Officer of iProv, LLC.

 

Also serving on the EAST Board of Directors are Jerry Damerow, who was elected Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee, immediate past chair Kelly Hunt Lyon, director of the Center for Community and Economic Development at the University of Central Arkansas, Dr. Anthony Chelte, dean of the College of Business at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Dr. John O’Connell, consultant with E2T2 Ltd., Julia Sites, IT specialist at Southwest Power Pool and Tommy Tyler, superintendent of Fouke Public Schools, Fouke, Arkansas.


Dominik Mjartan serves as Southern Bancorp’s Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Communications. Mr. Mjartan manages Southern’s corporate social responsibility efforts, including its public strategy of economic and social development. He also oversees Southern’s public policy initiatives and the bank’s external relations and directs the corporate functions of social metric design and reporting, research, fundraising, marketing and corporate communications. Southern Bancorp is America’s largest rural development bank. Southern seeks to reduce poverty by improving education and economic opportunities for individuals and families.

Prior to joining Southern, Mr. Mjartan served as a program director of Perks.com, a high-tech company providing global services to Fortune 500 companies. He earned an MBA at the University of Ulster (UK), graduating at the top of his class.  He graduated Summa Cum Laude and as a Donaghey Scholar with a B.S. in management from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Arkansas Energy Network and as president of the Cliffs Property Owners Association. Mr. Mjartan came to the U.S. from the former Czechoslovakia at the age of 16 with hopes of attaining the “American dream”, a dream he now strives to make attainable to thousands of disadvantaged people throughout the rural South.

 

Prakash Jalihal is senior vice president and managing director of Fidelity Information Services (FIS) for Latin America and the Caribbean and is responsible for the direct management of sales and operations in those areas. The company now operates in 26 countries in the region. FIS provides technology and services to the worldwide financial services industry, delivering banking and payments technologies to more than 14,000 financial institutions and businesses in over 100 countries worldwide.

 

Jalihal began his career with Fidelity Information Services, formerly Alltel Information Services and before that Systematics, in 1972 and has held various positions:  programmer/analyst, systems development division manager, planning and research manager, Little Rock remote processing center manager and global client operations manager. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bombay and a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Arkansas. Mr. Jalihal has served on the Advisory Board of the Thunderbird School for International Management and the University of Arkansas Engineering School.
