King EAST Students Assist Seniors With Employment Opportunities

Three senior citizens have worked with King EAST Students on numerous projects and received compensation from SCSEP.

Last Spring, King EAST sought out information about the AARP Foundation Senior Community Service Employment Program in order to make Martin Luther King Elementary Magnet a host site, and to date, 3 senior citizens have worked with students on numerous projects and received compensation from SCSEP. One project, pictured below, that the seniors were excited to participate in last May was an initial interview of Milton Crenchaw, Tuskegee Airmen Instructor for the Veteran's History Project (Library of Congress). Other projects the seniors have been actively involved in include the Butterfly Garden, Taking it to the Streets (Storm Drain) Project (Captain Planet Foundation), Fraternal Cemetery Project (PAAC, Inc.), Concession Stand for the Homeless (MLK Elem.) and general help in supervising over 300 EAST students, editing and proofreading 100s of student products, and the overall implementation of the King EAST program.

If you know of or locate a Senior that is 55 or older who meets the SCSEP income guidelines, they may be able to work with EAST projects for a limited time and improve their employment situation. There is a particular need for Senior Citizen recruitment in the Little Rock Area. For information on how a school or non-profit organization can become a host site, contact King EAST at 501-447-5135 or kingeast@gaggle.net. Also, you can find information about state and national locations of SCSEP offices at http://www.aarpworksearch.org/Pages/Locations.aspx.
