ICTC EAST Student and Oklahoma SkillsUSA State Secretary A. Singleton visited Washington, D.C. recently to take part in the SkillsUSA Washington Leadership Training Institute.

A. Singleton, a student in the EAST program at ICTC is serving as the 2009-2010 Oklahoma SkillsUSA Secretary. As such, Singleton recently took part in the SkillsUSA Washington Leadership Training Institute (WLTI).

SkillsUSA is a National Student Organization recognized by the Oklahoma Career Tech System that supports and encourages its members in career development and leadership skills. SkillsUSA members attend teambuilding and leadership training such as the WLTI and compete in trade specific skills competition.

The five day WLTI is sponsored each year by SkillsUSA to give students an opportunity to learn about Washington D.C. and the democratic process. This year's delegations discussed the value of their education, the value of public career and technical education to their respective states, the quality of their education and training, their occupation plans, and the benefits of their participation in SkillsUSA, stated Ravonda Bethel, ICTC EAST Facilitator and Singleton's SkillsUSA Advisor. The institute concentrates on advanced communication skills, including working with the news media and the inner workings of government. SkillsUSA emphasizes respect for the dignity of work, high standards in trade ethics, workmanship, scholarship and safety.
