Edward E. Darbonne joins the EAST Initiative as President/CEO with a career path that includes teaching, fundraising and information systems management. Most recently Mr. Darbonne was the Chief Information Officer of a major university foundation in the Midwest.

Mr. Darbonne has been a popular conference speaker for Computer Associates, IBM, the Big Ten Development Conference and the Big Ten Fundraisers Institute. His work in data warehousing has been profiled internationally.

The offer to join the EAST Initiative as President/CEO meant the chance to return to his native Arkansas after a 25 year absence. Mr. Darbonne is excited about the future of EAST and offers these comments:

"I have a deep and abiding commitment to the core values of the EAST Initiative. Student directed learning, teamwork, and the use of sophisticated technology within the context of community service provides so much more value than the typical student experience. 'Soft skills', or success skills as I prefer to call them, are critical in today's workforce. EAST gives students a way to develop their communication and leadership skills; but it also inculcates, in them, the value of service and good citizenship.

"Please let me share a few thoughts about the future of EAST. You can expect EAST to become more active in seeking gifts and grants as a way to make our programs more available to all students. We will enhance our growth process by focusing on implementations at the district and state level when working outside Arkansas. Thanks to an Excelerator grant from the SBC Foundation, EAST will be more able to provide new program content over the web. I also see an even stronger partnership between EAST and the State of Arkansas.

"As Matt Dozier says, 'EAST students are not the leaders of tomorrow; they are the leaders of today'. We pledge to our students that EAST will continue to provide the experiences that prepare them for ever greater roles in their communities and in their lives.
