11/6/2009 8:18:32 AM

The Eureka Springs High School EAST Program is celebrating GIS Day on November 18, 2009, Wednesday, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

In honor of Geography Awareness Week, Eureka Springs Mayor Dani Joy proclaimed November 18, 2009, as National GIS Day, and urged all Eureka Springs citizens to participate in this global event's GIS Day activities. Her proclamation joins Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe's own GIS Day proclamation.

The Eureka Springs High School EAST Program is celebrating GIS Day on November 18, 2009, Wednesday, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Open House activities will include a demonstration of various EAST mapping projects and a Map Gallery. Experienced student mappers will be there to answer mapping questions and show how to use a GPS rover. There will also be contests and games for all ages with cool prizes for the winners! Everyone is invited.

GIS Day is an event when Geographic Information Systems (GIS) users and vendors open their doors to schools, businesses, and the general public to showcase real-world applications of this important technology. The event is principally sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, the United States Geological Survey, The Library of Congress, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, and ESRI.

EAST (Environmental and Spatial Technology) students are encouraged to use advanced technologies to develop service-based projects that solve community problems. To learn about more about GIS Day and how you can support the Eureka Springs EAST Program, please contact EAST Program Facilitator Mila Lynne Floro at (479) 253-2936 or (479) 253-8875.
