The EAST staff would like to welcome three new distinguished members to the EAST Initiative Board of Directors. Dr. David Thornburg, Ms. Kelly Hunt Lyon, and Mr. Charlie Fitzpatrick were elected to the EAST Board for terms that extend into 2008. These new members join a board comprised of other business, government, and education leaders who are dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of children.

*Dr. David Thornburg is the founder and Director of Global Operations for the Thornburg Center. As Senior Fellow of the Congressional Institute for the Future, he conducts research and provides staff development in the areas of educational futures, multimedia, communications, and whole mind education throughout the Americas. He is active in exploring ways that telecommunications and multimedia will change the face of learning. His educational philosophy is based on the idea that students learn best when they are constructors of their own knowledge. He also believes that students who are taught in ways that appeal to their learning styles and levels of interest will retain the enthusiasm for learning with which they entered school. A central theme of his work is that we must prepare students for their future, not our past. Dr. Thornburg is the author of numerous books; his most recent book, Campfires in Cyberspace, explores the true nature of the World Wide Web as a tool for learning. He was recently commissioned to write a position paper for the United States Department of Education on the future of technology for K-12 education. In addition to consulting, speaking, and writing, Dr. Thornburg is also the recipient of several awards for product design, including the Golden and Platinum Disk awards from CUE (Computer Using Educators, Inc.) for his contributions to the advancement of learning and learning technologies.

*Ms. Kelly Hunt Lyon teaches developmental writing, composition, and study skills in University College at the University of Central Arkansas. In addition to teaching, she has written grants, served as project manager and co-editor of the custom study skills text Cornerstone: Building on Your Best at UCA, worked on campus technology initiatives, and developed a variety of special projects. She is currently working on her doctorate in developmental education with an emphasis on higher education administration. She holds a BA in English from Lyon College, and an MA in Technical and Expository Writing from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Prior to coming to UCA in 2003, she had thirteen years’ experience in both the public and private sectors, in addition to starting her own business designing print and electronic marketing materials for clients. Her private sector experience includes commercial real estate, human resources and technical and freelance writing. She’s published numerous articles and essays; her work has appeared in At Home in Arkansas, Arkansas Times, Arkansas Business Woman and the book Spiritual Autographs: Southern Women Tell Their Stories. Besides writing, her other long term professional interest is the state’s economic development. She served as Executive Assistant for Lt. Governor/Governor Jim Guy Tucker. From 1993-1996, she was a liaison for economic development and worked with state agencies and chambers of commerce to promote the state’s economic growth. She also worked for three years at the Arkansas Science & Technology Authority, marketing a technical assistance program for small manufacturers.

She is a member of numerous professional development organizations, including the National Association for Developmental Education, and recently served on the NADE Digest Editorial Board. Her previous community service work includes the Historic Arkansas Museum, the Ouachita Girl Scout Council Board of Directors, and the West Little Rock Optimist Club. In 2000, she received the Patterson Decade Award for Outstanding Achievement from Lyon College. She lives in Little Rock with her husband Martin Lyon and their daughter Lucy Grace.

*Mr. Charlie Fitzpatrick is co-manager of K-12 Education for ESRI, a leader in geospatial technology that enables better management of our world. Charlie is a Minnesota boy. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Geography from the University of Minnesota. He taught 7th-12th grade social studies from 1977-1992, while also coaching varsity boys and girls cross country running, cross country skiing, and track. His first computer was an Apple IIe, acquired in 1982. Since 1986, Charlie has been preaching the power of computers and geography to anyone who would listen, including several years of running the tech lab at National Geographic’s Summer Geography Institutes for teachers and directing institutes for IBM. He’s a recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award from the National Council for Geographic Education. In 1992, he began working for ESRI, helping teachers and students learn to use GIS as a tool for education. When not busy making maps, Charlie likes to take pictures and go scuba diving.
