Martin Luther King Elementary EAST recently received an educational grant of $1950 for the Taking It to the Street Project.

Martin Luther King Elementary EAST recently received an educational grant of $1,950 for the Taking It to the Street Project. The project will include teams of third, fourth, and fifth grade students along with "grassroots" organizations and city officials to combat environmental issues and raise public awareness concerning storm drains on city streets. Students will be involved in creating a documentary of environmental issues in the city, create radio and television PSA's about storm drain usage, alert citizens by labeling and creating a GPS map of storm drain locations, and create a video on how other organizations can mark drains and create a GPS map for future projects.

Through the project, students hope to educate the public to contradict the urban myth that storm drains lead to water treatment plants, when in fact, the drains empty into rivers or watersheds. The project will also help in stream-lining a process for addressing the problem in order to get other organizations active in helping the city mark drains and teach all citizens about storm drain issues.
