The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, through its education program, Project WILD, awarded a $2,550 grant to the Eureka Springs High School EAST Lab for the high school's butterfly garden. The grant funds will be used to purchase replacement butterfly host and nectar plants for the butterfly garden and for the plant bed that was expanded in 2006; to add another new plant bed; and, to repair and replace the garden's fencing.

EAST students planted the butterfly garden in 2004 and maintained it with grants from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, the Weyerhaeuser Foundation, the Arkansas Community Foundation, Carroll County Community Foundation (Youth Advisory Council) and donations from local residents. Students created butterfly videos and PowerPoint presentations that they shared with the community.

EAST students, in coordination with parents, school staff and alumni, other students and local residents, will continue to sustain, monitor and keep records of the butterfly garden. Since its installation in 2004, many guests have visited and admired the garden.

As Pat Knighten, Project WILD Coordinator of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wrote, "I have used the Eureka Springs' butterfly garden pictures several times as good examples of what can be done in a small space. I look forward to working with the Eureka Springs EAST students again."

The EAST Lab is a high school class that encourages students to use high-end technologies to solve community problems. To learn about more about the EAST Lab, the Butterfly Garden and the Project WILD, please contact EAST facilitator Mila Lynne Floro-Powell at (479) 253-2936 or (479) 253-8875.
