EAST Core staff James Hopper and Lori Canada have completed the first semester of site visits to EAST Core schools. During the visits they compiled a list of projects the schools are working on that are designed to equip students to learn and apply class concepts.

Many projects introduce students to new career ideas in STEM fields and show them the skills they learn in class are important and useful to professionals. These projects also require students to become familiar with technology that most high schools students do not have access to.

Examples of some current EAST Core projects:

Students will work with the Cane Creek watershed to continue water testing and analysis.

Students will work with local farmers to perform soil analysis of their gardens. Suggestions will be made to improve the quality of soil and food.

Students are working with their county Office of Emergency Management to develop flood maps to help emergency service personnel predict and respond to catastrophic flood events in their community.

Students will create brochures for the health and wellness center that is opening next year.

Students will begin creating a virtual model of Historic Hot Springs and learn to apply many of the skills they are learning in geometry this year.

Students will work with Cane Creek state park to identify, measure and geo-tag trees in the park and make recommendations based on their population density maps for the planting of new trees.

Students are going to map all district facilities so parents can more easily find facilities when travelling to other districts for competitions.

Students will create a plant/insect collection for the community library with an online database to share the collection.

Students will learn about principles of budgeting, interest and loans by working on family budget plans.
