Eureka Springs High School EAST Lab, through Facilitator Mila Lynne Floro-Powell, received a $500 grant from the Arkansas State Teachers Association (ASTA), to help fund the EAST Lab’s annual GIS Day celebration.

The EAST Lab will use the ASTA funds to purchase supplies and materials to help celebrate GIS Day, a global event held in over 100 countries, scheduled for November 15, 2006. On this day, businesses, governments and schools worldwide invite the public to view real-world GIS (mapping) applications that benefit their respective communities. Last year, the EAST Lab hosted over 100 guests during its GIS Day event. EAST students demonstrated mapping techniques and explained their various community mapping projects (like the emergency evacuation landing zone, 911 mapping, fire hydrant, and historic cemetery mapping projects).

The public is invited once again to this year’s GIS Day (November 15, 2006) to view the latest EAST Lab mapping projects, meet with experienced mappers, and enjoy mapping games and prizes, at the Eureka Springs High School EAST Lab, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The Arkansas State Teachers Association (ASTA) is a non-union, professional education association. ASTA is a state affiliate of the Association of American Educators (AAE), which was established to serve as a national advocate for educators.

EAST (Environmental and Spatial Technology) is a high school class that encourages students to use advanced technologies to solve community problems. To learn more about EAST and GIS Day 2006, please contact EAST facilitator Mila Lynne Floro-Powell at (479) 253-2936 or (479) 253-8875.
