EAST at Douglas MacAurthur Junior High School and their "Project Green Thumb" are finalist for the OpalĀ® apple Youth Make a Difference Initiative . The grant will award $40,000 in funding to youth-based initiatives serving communities in the U.S. where youth take leadership roles in the project.

The initiatives for the grant, chosen by Opal®, will address one or more of the following issues:

  • Food security
  • Nutrition
  • Agriculture
  • Food politics and education

Here is a summary of MacArthur’s “Project Green Thumb” submission:

Why donate food to someone and feed them for a day when you could show them how to feed themselves for a lifetime? That’s exactly what Project Green Thumb would strive to do. We would be a subsistence gardening project maintained by EAST students at Douglas MacAurthur Junior High School in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Our main goal is to promote the practice and benefits of subsistence farming throughout our community.

Our gardens would be located in cold frame houses and raised beds – all in full view. To ensure the longevity of the project, students will experiment with the organic high yield techniques as well as sell seasonal plants such as pumpkins, poinsettias, etc. We will frequently upload demonstrational videos to YouTube, give demonstrational speeches at local organizations’ meetings and schools, provide free take home starter containers, and forge partnerships with local restaurants and community leaders.
