Monticello High School's EAST program "Painted the Pond Pink" with a successful 5k race for breast cancer awareness.

In August 2011, Monticello (Arkansas) High School's EAST program decided to host a 5K run to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation, an organization that fundraises for researches cures for breast cancer.

EAST students used ArchGIS spatial software to create a route for the runners and walkers, determining that the 5K would begin at the school's pond and go around the University of Arkansas at Monticello's pond. Students teamed with local businesses, and community members to publicize the event and get citizens of the city involved. The 5K wasn't the end of their efforts, though. Monticello High's football team -- The Billies -- hosted a "Pink Out Game" to help raises awareness for breast cancer.

In total, the students earned approximately $2,000 that will be donated to the Komen Foundation.

Congratulations to Monticello High's EAST program for the great job that they've done for this important cause.
