EAST students host school-wide BLACKOUT, raising awareness of energy issues.

To raise awareness about the 2011-2012 EAST national service focus, ENERGY, Harrisburg High School EAST students hosted a school-wide BLACKOUT on Friday, April 8, 2011.

EAST students researched the electric bill for the entire year for the Harrisburg School District and found that nearly $500,000 was spent on electricity. During the Blackout, electricity was shut off for the entire day in the high school,  and students wore black clothing to support the cause.

Teachers created alternate lesson plans and used whiteboards instead of the usual SmartBoards. While many teachers chose to stay inside and have class as usual, some classes chose to go outside for the day. Various outside activities included: a GPS scavenger hunt, reading outside and making homeade ice cream from a bag.
