Imagine, your car starts to act up, you pull over to the side of the road, and now it will not crank. What do you do? EAST students Kendall and Ashley started the “Females Can Do It Too” project so girls will know what to do in this situation.

The students organized an assembly held on February 15 to educate tenth-, eleventh-, and twelfth- grade girls on the basics of car mechanics such as fixing a flat tire, changing the oil, changing a battery, changing windshield wiper fluid, and jump-starting a car.

The assembly featured a student-created video, which began dramatically with a girl, portrayed by Kendall, breaking down on the side of the road. She cannot get a signal on her cell phone, and she doesn’t know how to fix her car. Then a stranger, portrayed by student Drue, offers her a ride. He kidnaps her after she refuses.

From there the video went on to show how to properly maintain a vehicle, so females can avoid this situation.

The students brought a Ford Mustang on stage for demonstration purposes and two volunteers, Ashley and Latesha, were chosen from the crowd to demonstrate how to change a flat tire. After having watched the video, both girls were able to successfully change the tire.

“We hope that the girls who attended this assembly will be able to properly maintain their vehicles now”, said Kendall.

The girls would also like to thank Bill Deeb for appearing in the video and at the assembly. He assisted by demonstrating how to do the car repairs.
