Grant to be used to expand hydroponic greenhouse project.

The Green Forest EAST Hydroponic Team has received a $2,500 dollar grant from the Arkansas Department of Education Office of Coordinated School Health. The Healthy School Garden Grant was awarded to Green Forest for the expansion of its hydroponic greenhouse.

The current greenhouse can grow three hundred lettuce plants in an 8’ x 10’ space. The next stage of development will include a 10’ x 12’ greenhouse, a hydroponic drip system to raise tomatoes and peppers and outdoor raised beds to grow winter vegetables.

Produce will be used in the school cafeteria to provide a salad bar and a program to encourage ninth grade students to make healthy lifestyle choices. Over summer vacation our produce will be delivered to local food banks.

At the EAST 2011 national conference our hydroponic system was a popular substianability project and our members had many request for plans. Plans will be available on our EAST program wiki at http://greenforesteast.wikispaces.com/ within the next week.
