Sophomore named Student Volunteer of the Year at WISE Coalition’s annual awards ceremony.

Annie Rainwater, a sophomore in the EAST Program at Searcy High School, received the “WISE Coalition’s Student Volunteer of the Year” award this month at their annual Awards Ceremony. Annie is committed to decreasing underage drinking in White County. “When I heard that youth in White County have their first drink at 12.6 years on average, I knew we had to do something in EAST,” said Annie.

Annie, in collaboration with other EAST students, organized two activities to visit with parents in the Searcy School District. The mission of WISE was shared with parents/guardians attending the EAST Student-Led Conferences in the fall, as well as junior high parents attending Parent-Teacher Conferences. During these two activities she collected over 100 parent pledges to “Not Provide Alcohol To Minors” and distributed a “phenomenal” number of yard signs confirming the Parent Pledge. She redesigned the Guiding Good Choices flyer distributed by WISE and was willing to work at football games to seek more parent pledges. Trish Reppenhagen, Community Mobilization Assistant for the WISE coalition, comments about Rainwater, “She did all of these things in a very short time frame and with little to no guidance or input from me, and most of them were even her idea! She has been an amazing asset to us this year and we appreciate her greatly!”

Results from 2007 APNA (Arkansas Prevention Needs Assessment) Survey found that in White County, Arkansas: (1) youth have their first drink at an average age of 12.6 years, (2) 30.8% of 10th graders have used alcohol within the last 30 days, (3) 41.1% of 12th graders have used alcohol within the last 30 days, (4) 4.7% of 6th graders and 11.5% of 8th graders report binge drinking within the last 2 weeks.

Annie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Rainwater.
