Har-Ber High EAST Students held the fifth annual “Hour with a Hero”, a Veterans Day Event that showcases heroic actions of the men and women who serve our country.

Har-Ber High EAST students honored a special Veteran each period throughout their class day on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The Hour with A Hero Veterans Day event took place in the Performing Arts Center at Har-Ber High School in Springdale, Arkansas during six class periods throughout the day, beginning at 8:45 a.m. and concluding at 4:00 p.m.

The event was held to honor all the men and women who have served and who are presently serving our country. The students collaborated with the history department in making posters saying “thank you” to the Veterans. They also advertised and promoted the event weeks in advance and created decorations, invitations, presentations and video and photo documentation of the event. In addition, the students prepared speeches and introductions of the distinguished Veteran guests.

The Marine Corp Color Guard presented the colors to start the day. All Veteran guests in attendance were recognized and presented with a certificate thanking them for their service. Approximately 1800 students at Har-Ber were in attendance throughout the day.

The following six Veterans were selected as the 2011 “Hour with a Hero” honorees: Lt. Col. Gary Jackson (Retired), United States Air force; CDR Nancy Williams, United States Navy; Walter Morton, United States Marines; Darrel J. Ankeny, United States Air Force; Dr. Jesse Coker, United States Army and Thomas E. Easley, United States Air Force.

Each honoree had a specific hour in which they were the guest speaker. The Veterans each included their own presentations of videos, pictures and artifacts relating to their personal experience. Video footage of personal military rescues was shown, as well as photos pertaining to the Veteran’s mission(s). All the guest Veterans were invited to a reception/luncheon in their honor.
