EAST students place third out of 32 entries in Dropout Prevention Public Service Announcement contest.

Star City High School EAST students Allison and Julie placed third in a Dropout Prevention Public Service Announcement contest recently. Thirty-two entries were submitted from across the state and reviewed by a panel of judges that included a representative from the Arkansas Education Television Network, two representatives from the Arkansas Department of Education, a community service provider, a student representative, and a Criminal Justice Institute representative.

The contest was part of the Dropout Prevention Resource Database and Toolkit Project at the Criminal Justice Institute's Safe Schools Iniative Division. Through funding from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, SSID has been working to educate the public about dropout prevention measures since 2006.

The Star City High School EAST program will receive $250 for the third place win. Dr. Cheryl P. May stated in a letter to the group “The judges spent time viewing and rating each entry and your school’s PSA stood out in the competition.”

“I feel like as ninth grade EAST students, we proved that we can make a difference”, said winner Julie. The PSA was written and filmed by the two girls together. The duo hopes their PSA will help increase Arkansas’ 68% graduation rate.
