A rain garden is a planted depression that allows rainwater runoff from roofs, driveways, walkways and parking lots to soak into the ground, as opposed to flowing into storm drains and surface waters and causing erosion, water pollution and flooding.
Greenland High School EAST’s rain garden helps protect Ward’s Slough — a tributary of the West Fork of the White River, which runs adjacent to the high school — from pollution. It also provides an attractive and inviting habitat for birds, bees and butterflies. As stewards of a portion of the local watershed, EAST students have engaged and educated students, teachers, and community members about storm water runoff and the danger it poses to our watersheds, and consequently our drinking water.
