Student Competitions

One of our goals for the Conference each year is to allow as much participation from students as possible. To encourage this participation, we host a number of student-centered competitions or opportunities before and during the Conference.

At the 2008 Summer Seminars, EAST facilitators and staff discussed the benefits of entering student competitions for both the students and the EAST Program.  Not only is it really exciting if you win and receive cool prizes, but you also gain tons of experience and recognition from your peers.  For instance:

  • Creating posters, using graphic design, can provide wall decorations for your classroom.  Finalists of the poster competition are displayed at the EAST Training Centers.
  • The EAST Program and student receive recognition from your peers, school, and even the community.
  • You learn new things
  • Looks great on your resume
  • Provides self-confidence
  • Administration support and possible funding
  • Positive Challenge
  • Experience / Growth
  • The deadlines help you stay organized and provide "real-world" experience
  • Recognition & COOL PRIZES

Please encourage your students to review all the links in this section so they will know what opportunities they have to grow while preparing for the 2009 EAST Partnership Conference.  The following are in order by submission deadline.

Following the Conference theme “This is…My EAST”, a new opportunity has been added to this year’s event. EAST is looking for short Conference Commercials that showcase a variety of experiences within the EAST program. Although this is not a competition, selected commercials will be displayed on the Conference website in 2009 and at the Conference.  Submission deadline - December 10, 2008 (Complete)

The Poster Competition leads students in creating complex concepts and purposes on a single poster. Guidelines for this competition are very open ended to spark creativity. Finalists get to display their poster in the exhibit hall and winning posters are announced at the Conference during the Opening Plenary. Submission deadline - January 14, 2009. (Finalists Announced - 01/23/09)

There are also several Application Showcases that are sponsored by business professionals who give the students a chance to showcase what they are doing in their EAST program (previously named project competitions). Many of the partners have used past student project examples in their marketing and promotional efforts. Finalists may be announced prior to the Conference and asked to present their project to the judging team. Winners will be announced during the Conference's  Opening Plenary. Submission deadline - January 21, 2009

During the Opening Plenary and Banquet, Student Created Music will be featured. It is exciting to experience the music students are creating in their classrooms. Although this is not a competition it is another chance for students to showcase their creativity and be recognized in front of an audience of over 2000 people. Submission deadline - February 4, 2009.  - (Deadline extended to February 6th due to inclement weather the week before)
